April 2011 - The Yin and Yang of Yoga

The Yin and Yang of Yoga
John Bolwell and Dee Swift

Unfortunately the good weather and a British Wheel event meant that many people missed this lovely yoga day. But for those that did attend, it was not to be missed. John and Dee are very experienced and excellent teachers. Their theme for the seminar was evolution, metamorphosis and balance and they seamlessly wove elements of story and myth around these themes into the day.

The first half of the day was split between yin (more inward and solo) yoga practices and yang (more outward and partnered) practices. The yin practices started with floor postures (pose of a child) and progressed through to the standing postures (warrior and finally balance postures).

The yang practices involved couple work. Whilst this seemed quite daunting at first (well to me with my sometimes introvert nature!) it was in fact fun and interesting and helped to release inhibitions (who needs these holding us back!). John and Dee looked like dancers gracefully moving in and out of the postures they demonstrated.

The afternoon involved giving and receiving a Thai massage. Wonderful! Dee’s instructions on how to give the massage were clear and easy to follow and I feel I will be able to remember these and use the skills learnt in the future. And what can I say about receiving a massage! I saved the best till last and yielded to the infinite pleasure of this lovely tension release and relaxation.

I floated home after. How fortunate we are to have access to these inspiring teachers and practices
